THE VISIONARIES BEHIND SOH
1. Jeffrey Smith
Jamaican born business man Jeffrey Smith, CEO of Shalk Electronic Security Limited and award-winning educator/entrepreneur Dr. Karren Dunkley are the forces behind SOH.
Having made a name for himself as a visionary entrepreneur and businessman, Jeffrey Smith, has partnered with childhood friend Dr. Karren Dunkley to establish SOH, with the objective of using the business to attract further investments which will transform Hopewell. A lifelong entrepreneur, Jeffrey Smith is often described as an “entrepreneurial guru” for his innovative business sense and ability to start and maintain successful ventures. Through the success of Shalk Electronic Security Limited, a leading Static Guard and Electronic Security Systems provider company in Jamaica, Jeffrey has developed a solid reputation as an authority on issues of personal and national safety and security. With SOH, he has now extended his entrepreneurial ventures to tourism and entertainment.
2. Dr. Karren Dunkley
Award-winning educator and entrepreneur, Dr. Karren Dunkley is co-owner of Spiritz of Hanover. A Jamaican native, Dr. Dunkley is also a social justice activist who is passionate about sustainable community development and empowerment. She is an internationally recognized educator, speaker and leadership coach who has won numerous awards including the Impact Award from Philadelphia OIC, a Lindback Award for Distinguished Principal Leadership from the Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback Foundation, the Tuskegee University Education Advocacy Award and the Omega Psi Phi Educational Excellence Award. Dr. Dunkley is utilizing her experience and passion for development to spearhead SOH as a catalyst to transform Hopewell.
The vision behind SOH extends beyond the establishment of a premium entertainment spot. SOH is part of a wider strategic long-term plan, to engage the private and public sector to drive development in Hopewell and surrounding communities. Recognizing the potential of Hopewell as an excellent location, prime for development, SOH is being positioned to energize under-performing communities such as Hopewell and grow the local economy.
Both Jeffrey and Karren share the vision to place business and education at the center of community development by developing the tourism product and improving the tourism infrastructure in Hopewell. “We could have made the investment anywhere. However, our goal with SOH is to energize under-performing communities such as Hopewell and grow the local economy. It takes public-private sector partnerships to achieve this, so we want to place business and education at the center of community development.
We anticipate that this approach will build a pipeline out of poverty through job training, education and sustainable employment that transforms Hopewell into a community of opportunity,” Mr. Smith explained
